ubjec-tion, Eiseeyou cut a bowl-shaped hollowin the ice, and into this bled the seal.Then the dogs were released to drinkand feast upon the warm blood. Thisis their reward for patience and restraintwhile their master stalks his game, andonly his own team is permitted to par-ticipate in it. In this manner Eiseeyou killed twovery large seals. These were sufficientfor immediate needs. We lashed themupon a komatik with sealskin thongs,and without great delay resumed ourjourney toward Ellesmere Land. For some distance our course followeda wide lead of open water, where couldbe seen numerous seals and whitewhales, with an occasional walrus, whileoverhead hovered large flocks of seapigeons and small gulls. Presently thedogs crossed a fresh bears track and,wildly excited, took the scent and wereoff on a dead run after the quarry. Wewere as anxious as the dogs to catch thebear. Eiseeyou cut loose one of the sealsto lighten his load, and for a time ourspeed over the smooth ice was terrific. 265
