Wherever dutycalled him he hastened regardless of danger,and by his efforts and example contributedas much to secure the fortunes of the dayas any other officer subordinate to theCommander-in-Chief. His new renown and his chiefs recom-mendation now made Harrison a captainin the regular army and he was given com-mand of Fort Washington. His energyand capacity in his new post soon led to hisappointment as secretary of the North-west Territory; and when three yearslater, at the beginning of the new century,a division of the territory was made andOhio set off, because of his knowledge ofWestern affairs and his enterprise he be-came governor of the remaining territory,then called Indiana. He was but twenty-seven years of age atthis time, but was already looked upon bythe authorities at Washington as a man offine parts and more than ordinary ca-pacity.
