and dullwith threatening rain, and a gentle breezewafted to us now and again a bit of fra-grance from the spruce-covered hills above us. Almost before I realized it we wereat the rapid. Away to the westwardstretched Grand Lake, deep and dark andstill, with the rugged outline of Cape Cor-beau in the distance. Tom Blake and his family, one and all,came out to give us the whole-souled, hos-pitable welcome of The Labrador. EvenAtikamish, the little Indian dog that Mac-kenzie used to have, but which he hadgiven to Tom when he left NorthwestRiver, was on hand to tell me in his doglanguage that he remembered me and wasdelighted to see me back. Here we wouldstay for the night—the last night formonths that we were to sleep in a habita-tion of civilized man. The house was a very comfortable littlelog dwelling containing a small kitchen, alarger living-room which also served as asleeping-room, and an attic which was the Copyrighted, 1906, by the Outing Publishing Company.
