letthem go? I shall not gaff another fish thisseason! (Growls from Jack in the back-ground.) I waited. Were with you, they shouted; nomore salmon gaffed or killed unless we needthem to eat! I bowed my acknowledg-ments. It was time for supper. Behind thecamp the sunset colors were glorious, andchanged with shifting hues as we watchedthem. The first night in the wildernessis always the acme of delight and comfortthat one longs for during the tedious win-ter months. And as we sat by the firethat shone ruddy and warm in our faces,and watched the guides shadows lengthenand shorten as they moved about theflames, we were truly indescribably hap-py. There were no sand flies to botherus, and we sat there till long into the nighttalking, singing and counting the fallingstars that flashed and trailed across thetwinkling heavens. Then, one by one, thecrowd turned in, and one by one the fireswent out, leaving but the star darknessshining mystically on our five-tent campon Forteau River, Labrador.
