But thelocation of the motor out of sight undera front hood, the tilted steering wheeland control levers placed within thereach of one man, the glass wind shield, and the automobile tops with whichnearly all are supplied have given tothis type of craft a name which is ex-pressive as showing its similarity inequipment to that of its land cousin—the automobile—and the term willprobably always remain in the popularnautical vocabulary. He need not be discouraged, however, by such seemingly hopelessambitions, for it is really remarkablewhat a speedy, trim, and serviceablelittle craft ma\ be purchased for fifteenhundred dollars or less. In fact, anauto boat about twenty-five feet long
Text Appearing After Image:
674 THE OUTING MAGAZINE and capable of carrying six or sevenpassengers at the rate of twelve or four-teen miles an hour can be purchasedcomplete for about five hundred dollars. It may have been a boat of not morethan double this price with which Smitharoused the admiration of the landlub-ber who stood on the shore and watchedhim skim by—for a thousand dollarswill purchase a craft which is as at-tractive to look at as a much higher- complicated than the four-cycle type, itis seldom found in the auto boat inhorse powers exceeding twenty. Inhorse powers ranging from one half totwenty, however, the two-cycle typewill be found in every variety of boat, and it is in these smaller sizes in whichits greatest field of usefulness is found. It is not the desire of the writer tobe drawn into any discussion of the rel-ative merits of these two leading forms
