s,but you do not see them often. Theyrun in large bands, and I think are themost dangerous of American game. Ifyou see one you will see a great many,but I have never yet seen one, althoughI have found their tracks plentifully inmany places. Bear, both silvertip and cinnamon,are reasonably plentiful, but except byaccident are impossible to get at unless plentiful. Two varieties of quail areplentiful, and a little south of where Iwas there are a considerable number ofwild cattle which have probably existedin the wild state in these mountains fornot less than one hundred years. This is about all, except for a veryoccasional timber wolf and an occasionalprairie wolf strayed up into the timber.There are also otter in the streams anda few ducks. All the larger mountainstreams have trout, but not plentifully. Generally speaking, Mexico does notoffer many good trout brooks. In thestate of Durango there are one or two—one on the trail between Mazatlan andDurango City is said to contain a new

Of the many mountain streamsthat I crossed and visited I found troutin but one, and not many of them there.But along the coast there is excellentsport to be had with the rod. What I have said I trust will be suf-ficient to give an insight into the char-acter of Mexican hunting grounds andto serve in a general way as guide tosome of the best and most availablelocalities. It would be quite impossibleto describe in detail the many attractivesections in the course of one brief article. It would be difficult to imagine a coun-try offering so many varieties of climatewithin a few miles space as one mayfind in Mexico.
