Strikinga contrary wind, the Peoria deviatedfrom the course and was carried severalmiles out to sea, to the consternation ofthe residents of the beach towns nearLos Angeles. Happily, a call for theVenice life-saving crew was not neededas the wind suddenly shifted and an in-shore current bore the voyagers safelyto land, where a quick descent followed. But the feature of the meet was theaeroplane, and the king of the aviatorsin popular esteem was Paulhan.
