SOMETHING NEW IN MOTOR BOATS An Engine that Can Be Attached at Will When the Oarsman Wearies ofHis Labors, or Wind or Tide Impede FRANCE is responsible for this lat-est freak among motor boats. Themotor is a light, single cylindertype, although it is intended that a morepowerful engine be used if desired. Thepropeller is attached to a long steel rodwhich permits it to be buried in the wa-ter at approximately the same depth asthough the boat were constructed in theusual fashion. The apparatus is fastenedto the stern of the boat with a simple ar-rangement of iron braces which permitit to be swung aboard when it is not inuse or needed. The most obvious obstacle to the useof the device is the liability of breakageof the braces on short turns owing to asudden increase of the side strain.
