A Day with a Devonshire Farmer 687 scrupulously clean and sweet conditions es-sential to the old-fashioned tub-and-hand method of butter making, which still persiststhroughout the greater part of the county. On market day in the nearest town threemiles away, the narrow streets, edged byplain two-story structures faced with ayellowish-white composition of stone andcement, are filled with cattle and with theusual open-air stalls. In the BrindleCow, the local hostelry, are gathered atdinner a score or more of local worthies andfarmers from round-about gossiping of com-ing auctions and — after the grog, whichis always part of the two-shilling dinner—of local personalities and small talk andthe little scandals that agitate the mindsof these thrifty and honest people. Thecompany is presided over by the popularauctioneer, who is many other things aswell, and who punctuates the remarks ofhis associates with a genial Well done,or No doubt.
