the total membership is com-posed of them. The club house is opento them every day until 3 oclock and THE ORANGE ATHLETIC CLUB. 127 all day on Monday and Thursday. Thisfeature of lady membership is an in-novation in athletic clubs. ProfessorSargent, of Harvard College, in a recentvisit commented very favorably on thispleasant plan. The annual dues and re-ceipts from billiards, bowling and tennismore than meet the current expenses ofthe club and necessary repairs, while theinitiation fees are forming a sinking fundwith which to redeem the bonded debt of a portion of the front of the house. Themain doors open into a small lobby withthe office placed conveniently at one side,and wide curtained openings give accessto the ladies reception room on the leftand the main hall or assembly room be-yond at the end. Ihe lobby is decoratedwith a heavy dado of embossed Japaneseleather in gold and bronze. Above this,to the ceiling, the walls are in plastic workin warm, soft colors, combed and flashed

THE BILLIARD ROOM. the club. Financially the club is as soundas it IS socially. THE CLUB HOUSE. The club house is divided practicallyinto two buildings : the club house properfronting on Halstead street and the tennisbuilding that extends back and faces onRailroad avenue. The location is mostconvenient, it being almost the geograph-ical centre of the Oranges and not ahundred yards distant from the BrickChurch station of the Morris and EssexRailroad. The entrance to the house isacross a low wide piazza extending along in metals. The ceiling is in plastic work,with border of bronze in mosaic lines. Inthe assembly room, with its wide fireplace, with a welcome blazing fire in win-ter, is the heavy oak mantel on which areplaced various club trophies. The sidewalls are stippled in plastic work of pleas-ing cedar hue. The frieze has a designof a flowering vine in bronze and oldgold.
