This team is a signal illustration ofwhat can be done with what lookedlike undesirable material, but it simplyproves that if a team is not inherentlyvicious, it can speedily be educated,that the members will soon forget allthe tricks of the track, and that theywill be able to go at a racing gait with-out a formidable array of boots andleggings, which the professional traineris so unduly fond of using. Simplicityis often the secret of success. Many other fine teams might be men-tioned, but the foregoing have been sin-gled out as representatives of the class,and the time they have made draws atten-tion to the fact that the amateur driverfor pleasure is almost, if not fully,the equal of the professional driver onthe track. JohnMurphy wras less than regulation weight,but with his full weight of 150 pounds,and Mr. Vanderbilts weighing 200pounds, there was a handicap of 50pounds, in spite of which the amateurcame out ahead. The best time madeby a racing team of trotters to a skeletonwagon driven by a professional trainer,stands to the credit of the bay mare instances ; they are representatives ofthat large class of Americans who loveteam driving for its own sake and whohavestudied the art so closely that theyneed ask no odds from their professionalbrethren, and whether on the road ortrack, with equal material, need no timeor any other allowance.
