I heard some-thing else. It must have been the ex-pressman. I peeped through the por-tieres and saw that they were tuggingat a large object. Some one has sent us a sofa, Ithought, just as Tom came in and be-gan to sing. His sudden gayety surprised me and Iran out to look at the sofa. The sofawasnt a sofa at all, but a tandem cycle. My heart thumped up into my throat.Oh, what a beauty it was, with its lovely, shiny frame and spick-and-span newtrimmings ! Tied to one of the wheelswas Uncle Darbys card. Tom was un-doing the skeleton case, which he hadbrought in ; and, putting my armsaround his neck, I said : Isnt Darbya darling ? Thats what I always claimed !Tom answered, with sparkling anima-tion. I guess he had forgotten what hesaid concerning the hypnotist. We tore away the strings and papersand finally came to some clothing.Tom took out one of the garments andheld it up. What is it ? What are they ? hequestioned. Painted for Outing by A. W. Van Deusen. UNCLE DARBYS SURPRISE. A HONEYMOON ON WHEELS. A ladys cycling costume ! I cried. Be jinks and be jabbers Ill eat oursix clocks if it is not! lie exclaimed, with wide - opened eyes. Tom fre-quently uses rather peculiar expres-sions. We examined the remainder ofthe contents of the box and discoveredit contained two entire and perfectbicycle outfits. The jackets were madeafter the same style, with pleats andbelts, and there were caps and glovesand all the necessary fixings. My heartwas thumping like a trip-hammer, I wasso happy, and, slipping my hands intoa pocket of my suit, I drew out a note.Breathless and excited, I read : My Dear Niece and Nephew :—Asyou already know, I consider wheelingthe greatest, grandest, finest exercise tobe found on this planet. So I send youthe best roadster to be had for love ormoney, warranted to do anything butclimb a tree, haul a freight train, jumpa river, or outrun a streak of lightning. Its a dandy, and goes like
