In my own case I find that my normalpace, on a steady march over fair road,is thirty-three inches, and the cadenceone hundred steps to the minute. Thiswould be 1,920 paces to the mile. Al-lowing for ordinarily uneven ground, Ifigure on 2,000 paces to the mile, whichis eighty-eight yards to the hundredpaces, and three miles an hour. Thishappens to be convenient in plotting, for,when mapping on a scale of two inchesto the mile, as in Fig. 2, each of the -feinch squares on my cross-section paperrepresents exactly eighty-eight yards, orone hundred paces of 31.68 inches. In the wilderness, where roads aregenerally bad, if there are any at all,the distance traversed is of less conse-quence than the time taken to cover it.So, in sketching a route for some otherpersons guidance, it is important to givea time table from point to point. Yourestimates of distance may be faulty, butyour watch can be relied on. Time measurements also are good
