This, it will be remembered, was atthe beginning of the starving season ofthe present year. A day or two afterwriting me the above letter, Leek wroteme again that he had canvassed JacksonsHole to learn how much hay eachranchman could in safety spare from hisneeds for his domestic stock. Last sum-mer was one of unusual drought, andLeek found less than fifty tons of hayavailable for elk. Early in February the State legisla-ture so far aroused itself from its indif-ference to the conditions as to vote anemergency fund of $5,000 to relieve theelk. Had this been done last spring andhay purchased last summer, it wouldhave gone far toward saving the elk, butwith no hay obtainable at this late dayit can be of no use. A meeting was calledof all the settlers before this emergencyfund was voted, to consider the feasibil-ity of driving their cattle over Teton 195
