er it rains, or we have wind, hail,electrical phenomena, or dust storms. That evening it seemed a needlessalarm, for outside the full moon wasturning Elm Spring into poetry. It wasan April night, when fairies meet in the glens and dance on the greensward tothe music of tinkling rills. It was anight on which to steal away, far fromthe bump and clatter, and hold a trystwith the fireflies, or the mosquitoes asthe case might be, but I had my ordersto get ready for the mail and I hadnthad my supper. Packard may or may not have justarrived—at least it was the first I hadseen of him that day. He was quitelikely to bob up unexpectedly, by team,by freight, or by any other odd and endof conveyance. He traveled on no setschedule, did Packard. Tobacco isalways in demand was his excuse forirregularity. Hello, man, I said. Is that allyouve got to do?
