That man) Easterners, particularlyfrom New York, traveled across thecontinent to watch the tests of mono-planes, biplanes, and dirigibles is addi-tional evidence of the widespread inter-est in this effort to conquer the airhighways. Within six miles of the Pacific Oceanand fourteen miles southwest of LosAngeles, on the famous old Dominguezrancho—a notable holding in pre-Gringodays—was the site chosen for the ex-hibits. On the west line of a vastfield, devoid of trees or shrubbery, theImmense grand stand was erected, givingto its fifteen thousand occupants an un-obstructed view of the aviation maneu-vers. Strung around the inclosure onthree sides, many ranks deep, on foot,in carriages, and in automobiles, was adaily attendance at least as large againas the crowd filling the grand stand andboxes.
