losely as they could, whilethe air was full of leaping tunas andsoaring flying fish. At such timeswhen a school of sardines is rounded upthe fishes are so terrified that men haverowed up to them and scooped them inby the pailful. I have stood in a boat when the airseemed literally full of fish, the tunascoming up with a rush from below andendeavoring to catch the flying fisheswith tremendous leaps. Sometimes theytake them in mid air; again they strikeand knock them higher, bleeding ordead, or miss them altogether. Butwhatever the result, the tuna is neverdisplaced; it makes the same spectacularjump, utterly unlike that of the sword-fish, shark, or tarpon, returning to thesea head first with a graceful curve. The great run of 1909 at Santa Cat-alina and Clemente was marked by sev-eral innovations. The fishes were inmore collected schools. They remainedand struck and were caught until Oc-tober 7th, an entirely new date, as informer years they generally stopped bit-ing about August 15th.

) 544 THE OUTING MAGAZINE In former years they were mostlytaken near shore, from Avalon to LongPoint—a distance of about four miles—being the only place in the world wheretunas could be taken with rod and reel, despite the fact that anglers went toMadeira, Italy, the St. Lawrence, andother places for them. The conditionsmust be just right to take the biggest brought into the Tuna Club house atnight when the anglers came home wereof a lurid type and a history-makingcharacter. It was like a lot of scoutsmeeting after a battle, taking an ac-count of the injured, the wounded, asthey recounted the loss of rods or lines, and a thousand and one lamentable ca-lamities.
