. Two miles on the rough ice foot, andwe descended again to the sound to findthe ice smooth and fine, covered with ahard-packed drift. Presently, two ofOxpuddyshous dogs laid down, utterlyexhausted. He beat them nearly todeath with the handle of his whip, butit was of no use. They howled lustilybut would not walk another step. Thenthe komatiks were unloaded, and to mygreat joy I learned that an igloo was tobe built and we should rest. I set my watch by guess, for I hadlost all record of days and time andeverything, and when the igloo wasready, crawled into my sleeping bag fortwelve and a half hours of dreamlessslumber. A strong northerly wind was blow-ing when we arose, and the weather wasintensely cold. The Eskimos feastedon frozen walrus meat, chipped off withhatchets, while I heated a can of bakedbeans for my breakfast.
