CANELAS FROM THE TRAIL. and freely, to Wilkinsons evident satis-faction. Outside the town our trail took anabrupt turn to the left, and rose at oncea thousand feet to the summit of aridge. Here we halted for a moment toenjoy the beauty of the scenery. Thefirst golden rays of sunlight were nowglorifying the mountain peaks, whichlay about us in a confused mass. Be-low, in a hollow, Chacala nestled likea toy village, while along its northernedge the creek wound down throughthe gulch, a silver thread. We followed the crest of the ridgefor a little distance, then turned intoa canon where the trail hung upon thealmost perpendicular face of a wall fora few miles, midway between heavenand earth, before it finally dipped tothe bottom with a steep descent. Hereit branched, and Wilkinson for a timewas puzzled, but finally decided thatwe should ascend the rocky bed of astream between the canon walls.
