w, I am informed, in operationto this point, and to-day one may boarda Pullman car in Los Angeles and beset down at Mazatlan without change. In spite of its importance, this is thefirst railway communication the city hasever had. In this connection perhaps itis worth while to mention an erroneousstatement appearing in a voluminousand presumably authoritative work onMexico, published in 1907, in which theauthor states: Mazatlan, in the Stateof Sinaloa, is more fortunately placed,since there are two lines of railway run-ning from the port into the interior, butneither as yet communicating with theCapital. There are no such lines of railwayhere. A survey was once made for aproposed railroad to connect Mazatlanand Durango, but the engineers foundthe grades too steep to negotiate, andno actual construction work was everdone upon the line. Unfortunately for Mazatlan, its har-bor offers no shelter to shipping, andtherefore, during heavy weather, it hassometimes been shut off for considerable

Aplan for building a safe harbor to costbetween six and seven million pesos hasbeen approved by President Diaz, andit is hoped that the work will be begunshortly. The annual exports from thisport to San Francisco alone amount to$3,000,000 United States gold, and itsimports to upward of $1,500,000. Thisdoes not take into account the large ad-ditional coastwise trade. There is an excellent opportunity herefor Americans with limited capital toenter into business, with profits largeand certain. For instance, there is nota shoe store in the city, though there isa strong demand for one. Those desir-ing information upon the subject shouldcommunicate with the American consulon the ground. Germans at presentenjoy a large share of the retail trade.
