ycame out two up. Phelps was handi-capped by a badly blistered hand andcould not take the lead from his op-ponent at any time, although he was al-ways close on his heels. In the finals Egan made his appear-ance at this stage of a national tourna-ment for the third time. On the twoother occasions he came through success-fully, but the third times the charm,and the Yale youngster was too strong for the older man, winning by four upand two to play. At no stage of thefinal round was Egan in the lead, al-though he had the match squared twoor three times. Gardner, whose home club is Hins-dale, is a new figure in national golf,but if he keeps to his present form andrate of progress he should be a hard manto play against for a number of yearsto come. His age, nineteen, is greatlyin his favor, and steady playing com-bined with reasonable study of the gameshould keep him in the front rank for along time. It would be refreshing tosee a youthful golfer of promise for oncerun true to expectations.
