At twelve oclock on December 9thwe came out on a high bluff, and belowus lay a fertile valley. The forest wasbehind us. As we dropped into theplain, fields of maguey and corn sprangup about us. Adobe huts took the placeof log cabins, and gardens of tuna cac-tus, cultivated for its fruit, lined thetrail. Within three hours the wholeaspect of the country had changed. The trail was crowded with pack-trains of merchandise, the people hadassumed a more conventional air, and atlast, when we forded a river and cameupon a stage road, I knew that the rail-road was near at hand and was not dis-appointed. Two more fordings of theriver, then up a hill, and below us layTepehuanes, and the cozy American rail-road station and lines of rails leadingaway to link it with the world. 333

In the central and more substantialpart of the town we found the HotelInternacional and entered its wide door-way to dismount in the patio. Here aneffusive and polite landlord greeted usand assigned me a room—the best, hedeclared, in his most excellent establish-ment. It had no windows, the stonewalls were damp, and water oozed outof the earthen floor in one corner.There was a bed, however, with mat-tress and clean sheets on it, and thispromise of comfort counterbalanced alldefects.
