The original settlers of a quarter ofa century ago had no devious reasons forattracting others. They merely loved thecountry, it was a climatic paradise com-pared to the places from which some ofthem came. The eternal summer, the cool nights, the impressive scenery, thenovel fauna and flora, the succession ofsunlit days, all strengthened their beliefthat they had discovered a region morethan ordinarily blessed. The flowers ofSanta Barbara, San Jose or Pasadena, thesplendid mountains of the San Joaquin,Kern River and Sacramento regions, andthe numerous ranches, the mild climate,all these captivated and held the touristand made of him a citizen of California. In this way the American Riviera hasbeen populated, and to-day it is a vast andwealthy American colcny living on thegreat principalities of the old Spaniards. 534

Many of these have winter homesin Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Diego, Cor-onado, Riverside, Redlands, Santa Cruz,San Jose, Sausalito, and a hundred townsall the way to San Francisco and beyond.Many others are on a voyage of discovery,to try out the rumors and compare thecountry to Italy, while the greater num-ber are there because, winter and summer,California is to them, a great and wonder-ful playground, a national park affording a remarkable variety of interesting recre-ations, due to the fact that winter in Cal-ifornia in the lowlands, means the seasonof wild flowers.
