| Description |
From August 1952, Lancaster NX664 served with the French Navy using the identity ‘WU-21’. In January 1963 it was damaged in a landing incident on Wallis Island in the South West Pacific and was consequently stripped for parts and abandoned there. It was finally recovered to France in 1984 and has been under long term static restoration at Le Bourget airport (Dugny) by Ailes Anciennes Ile de France. The outer wings have now been ‘loaned out’ to assist with the airworthy restoration of East Kirby’s Lancaster NX611, which is also ex-French Navy. I believe the intention is to use them to temporarily replace the equivalent wing sections on NX611. This will keep NX611 as a taxiable exhibit while her own wings are brought up to airworthy condition. Once this is complete the wings will be swapped back and the wings of NX664 will be returned to France in a restored condition.
