Summary
[edit]DescriptionOuter wall, Dunraven Castle remains. - geograph.org.uk - 1213792.jpg |
English: Outer wall, Dunraven Castle remains. Dunraven castle was in fact a castellated mansion, built from c.1800 onwards on the site of earlier mansion and was demolished in 1962. It was described as a 'manor place' in the 1530's, but referred to as a castle from c.1580.
It is set upon the ramparts of a promontory fort(c.500BC), one of many along the coast between Bridgend and Barry. Before its eventual demolition the castle had been the family home of the Earl of Dunraven and had served as a hospital for injured servicemen in both world wars. |
