in 1886. The Old Broadway Theatre was erected in 1847 and o^enel onSeptember 27 of that year with The School for Scandal. Thistheatre, which wculd seat 4.000 persons, was located on the eastside of Broadway, between Pearl and Anthony streets. The seatswere nothing more than benches without any supporting back,yet the house was described in its day as one of the best ar-ranged places of am.usement in New York, and was supposedto have been mcdeled after the Haym.arket cf London. HereEdwin Forrest and Macready won their greatest laurels. In1859 the building was torn down and warehouses erected on theproperty. ASTOR PLACE OPERA HOUSE. The Astor Place Cpca House, made famous to history through the disgraceful Macready riot which occurred there in 1849, was opened to the public November 22, 1847, by Sanquirico 1847 and Patti, under the management of John Sefton.
