237 238 OUR OWN ISLANDS All the ground not shown as marsh on Fig. 1U5was raised a little above the valleys of the Thamesand Lea, and most of it was clothed with trees. We still have remains of these woods in Epping andHainaiilt Forests, east of the Lea. There wereonce bears, and wolves, and w ild oxen, and deerhiding in the green glades. If you look next at Fig. 106, you will see somemarks of this old London before houses. Do younotice the spaces labelled park ? These arepieces of the open country which have never beenbuilt upon. London has gradually spread roundthem. Measure the length and breadth of HydePark in Fig. 107. Then turn back to Fig. 106, and notice theshaded portions which show the extent of thehouses and streets. Do vou see that there is vervlittle building in the Lea Valley ? That is becauseof the marshy nature of the ground. West Hamand Leyton have been built in Essex, chieflybeyond the marsh. But in the Thames Vallev the land near thecentre of London became so valuable
