nowspends a day or two running northward on hismotor car to Newcastle. As he is a sensible manwho wishes to see something of the country, andnot merely to rush through it at the highest speed,he determines to stop a while at Newcastle. Here we wiU advise him to make an excursionon foot, and to climb, for the sake of the view, thegreat hill at the northern end of the Pennine Chainwhich is called Cross Fell. This hill is a mass of Umestone, rising, as we havealready learnt, to a height of nearly three thousandfeet. From its summit in fine weather both theNorth and the Irish seas are visible as bright linesalong the eastern and western horizons. Thesnows of winter remain long upon the crest of CrossFell, and in some years have been seen therethroughout the summer. Three rivers, the Tees, the Wear, and the south-ern head-stream of the Tyne, rise in the moors 67 68 OUR OWN ISLANDS which slope gradually eastward from Cross Fell. <..■...
