line there is a succession of curves, the radii of which are verysmall ; and though some of these are found on steep inclines, the line is worked with economy and safety. On the Manchesterand Leeds Railway are two curves, each of 220 yards radius, distant from any station, and there is one in a gradient of onein eighty-two, over which the trains have run with security andspeed for several years. On the other hand, some curves havebeen found so inconvenient that their radii have been altered. Thus, on the Lancashire and Yorkshire line, at Charleston, theradii of several have been increased from 660 to 2,000 feet; andon the Midland line at Shipley, near Bradford, the radius of thecurve by the removal of a hill of rock will be greatly improved. Some of the most remarkable curves are on the American ro4 OUR IRON ROADS. linos. This is not surprising considering the bold outline ofmany districts of the country through which some of theserailways are carried. One of them is known as the Chiques
