Text Appearing Before Image:
dense population of the de-scendants of Ham, and many of these tribes have apparentlydescended in the scale of intelligence since Ham took Africafor his homestead. Also, all kinds of African game, big andlittle. It is the greatest hunting ground on earth. We have, for a long time, had a desire to visit this greatcontinent, and having an opportunity to take a holiday, mywife and I decided to spend it in Africa. Mrs. Wheeler hasgreatly assisted me, and to her you may ascribe all that youfind that is good (if you find any), in this little book, andblame me for the rest. The following pages will give you a very brief report ofsome things we saw In Darkest Africa. You will find lOOphotographic illustrations of scenes typical of the country, which will also help to give you an idea of things as theyactually appear to the traveler. In reading this booklet, we hope that you may feel thatyou are making the trip with us and enjoy the journey. Sincerely yours, W. W. WHEELER. OUR HOLIDAY IN AFRICA

OUTWARD BOUND January 24th, 1912, we sailed from New York on thesuperbly appointed steamsliip Olympic, sister ship to thefated Titanic. She is the greatest vessel that ever sailedthe seas up to the present time. She cost seven and one-halfmillion dollars, and has a crew of eight hundred and sixtymen, accommodations for twenty-five hundred passengers, average speed is n\er fi\e hundred miles per day. Lengthover all, eight hundred and eighty-two feet. Think of it, overone-sixth of a mile, nearly as long as three of our city blocks;breadth, ninety-two feet; height to the top deck, one hundred:md five feet, having eleven Steele decks. Lighted and heatedby electricity, the state rooms are large and elegantly fur-nished. By di\dne instructions Noah built the Ark. It waslarge enough to meet requirements at that time, being fivehundred and fift) feet long, ninety feet wide and fifty-fourfeet high, divided into three decks. The floor space wasless than one-sixth of the floor space of the Olympiourholidayinafri01whee
