George Washington, who was one of thedelegates from Virginia, was unanimouslychosen president of the convention. Thesessions of this body lasted four months, andthe convention, instead of revising the arti-cles of confederation, adopted an entirelynew constitution. Each article of this coiistitution was discussed with care and minute^ness, and with great feeling. The sessionsof the convention were held with closeddoors ; but its proceedings were so far fromharmonious that there were several occa-sions when it seemed likely the conventionwould break up in confusion, and leave itswork unfinished. At length, however,through the patriotism and forbearance ofits members, the convention brought itswork to a close, and presented the constitu-tion to Congress. It was submitted by thatbody to the several States for their approval. The State governments summoned con-ventions of their respective people, and sub-mitted the constitutio.^ to them for theiracceptance or rejection. By the end of 1788
