STORMING OF CHAPULTEPEC. The castle of Chapultepec stood on a steepand lofty hill, and could not be turned. Ifwon at all, it must be by a direct assault.On the twelfth of September the Americanartillery opened fire upon it, and reduced italmost to ruins. On the morning of thethirteenth a determined assault was made bythe Americans, and the castle was carriedafter a sharp struggle. The fugitives from Chapultepec retreated During the night of the thirteenth SantaAnna, with the remains of his army, retreatedfrom the city, leaving the authorities to makethe best terms they could with the conquer-ors. The city officials presented themselvesbefore General Scott before daybreak, andproposed terms of capitulation. This little forceheld out bravely until thearrival of a brigade fromVera Cruz, under Gen-eral Lane, on its way toreinforce General Scott.Lane d-ove off SantaAnnas army, and re-lieved Puebla on theeighth of October. Tendays later Santa Annawas reported to be col-lecting another force atAlixo. Lane set out im-mediately for that place,reached it by a forcedmarch, and dispersed theMexicans beyond allhope of reunion.
