gravel is available, or ifbroken stone may be had at reason-able cost, farmers can easily mix thevery best of concrete at comparative-ly small expense. A little experiencewill soon put a person right. Instructions may be had from thecement makers and from governmentbulletins. Each man can experimentwith the kind of cement, sa*id andgravel that he has at hand. To test sand, put a handful or twoin a pail of clear water, stir it welland notice if it makes the water mud-dy. Good concrete requires clean,sharp sand. Sand containing morethan 10 per cent of mud makes a poorjob. Sand may be washed, but it isslow, expensive work. Put together different proportionsof cement, sand and gravel and fill tincans with the mortar. Within a weekexamine the concrete. These experi-ments will teach more than to readrules by the page. Your lumber deal-er will tell you the kind of cement touse for your work. Yf your neighbor is going to build tell him aboutthis book—and do both him and us a stood turn. 72
