he musk-ox being the most inaccessible animal in the wholewide world. Both sexes have horns. The hornsare heavy at the base and curve downward, beingrecurved toward the ends. The hair is very longand coarse, hanging down nearly to the ground insome specimens. The color is dark brown. Theheight at the shoulder is a little over four feet. A full-grown animal will weigh as much as 350 pounds. Theaverage weight will probably not exceed 300 pounds.:(: Musk-oxen or sheep are never seen in large herds.Sometimes only a very few animals are seen together.Herds have been observed which contained fortyand perhaps more animals. Whitney says the averageherd will contain from ten to twenty animals, therebeing one or two bulls to each herd. The range of themusk-ox is believed to have been formerly circumpolar, but the animals are found to-day only in Arctic North * Sport and Travel in the Northland of Canada, Lcyidon, 1904. f Our Feathered Game, p. 202 X The heaviest weighed by Greely was 432 pounds.

In winterthe thermometer often remains 50 to 60 degrees belowzero and a spirit thermometer must be carried if thesportsman desires to know how cold it is. The mer-cury freezes and is of course useless. There is abso-lutely no fuel to be had, and a large part of the sports-mans baggage is wood, to be used to make a little firefor cooking his meals. This is transported on sledsdrawn by the dogs, which are used to chase the musk-oxen and hold them until the sportsman arrives withinrange. The camps are cheerless in the extreme. Thehardships to be endured are far greater than thosewhich the sportsman undergoes anywhere else in theworld. Mr. Whitney made his trip to
