Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 10950 Main Street, Clarence, New York, October 2020. Built in 1964, the building is a fine example of the heavily Modernist-influenced Late Gothic Revival style that dominated Catholic church architecture in Western New York in the middle 20th century: pointed arches predominate, but so do sleek lines and geometric forms, even in the tracery that adorns the large stained-glass window above the main entrance. The second Catholic church to serve Clarence, Our Lady of Peace was cleaved off the parish territory of St. Teresa of Avila in Akron (and St. Teresa's pastor, John Uriel, was recruited) to serve the Catholics of Clarence Hollow. Their original home, built in 1922, was superseded by this larger edifice in defiance of the overall trend in the Diocese of Buffalo of stagnation and shrinkage of Catholic parish populations in that period of history.
