| Description |
English: Our Lady Help of Christians Roman Catholic Church, 4125 Union Road at Genesee Street, Cheektowaga, New York, September 2021. Though the parish is far better known for its historic Maria Hilf Chapel - a prominent local site for healing pilgrimages since its foundation in 1851 by German immigrant Joseph Batt as an act of gratitude to the Virgin Mary for his family's survival of a tempestuous trans-Atlantic voyage fifteen years earlier - the modern-day worship hall is architecturally interesting in a decidedly different way: an early example of the New Formalist school of Modernism (described in contemporaneous news reports as "the only [church] of its kind to be erected in this part of the country), it was constructed in 1959 and is a prime example of this stylized marriage of the trademark forms and tropes of Classicism with the sleek lines and minimalism favored by post-WWII architecture. Round-arched windows, elegant in their simplicity, perforate the otherwise blank façade of this roughly diamond-shaped building on both its far edges and the octagonal, domed corner tower. |
