Description |
English: The Our House saloon opened around 1898 at the corner of Washington Street and Occidental Avenue in Seattle. Owner John B. Rogers did an enormous business during the Gold Rush, selling drinks to men passing through Seattle on their way to and from the Klondike. Our House became one of the famous saloons in the city. The Seattle city directories list the Our House Saloon as a business offering "Bar, Cafe, Billiards, and Pool" through the 1905 directory. Begining in 1906, the business is listed as Our House Wine & Liquor Co. Inc (as printed on this Rye whiskey label) with Bacher and Grimminger as the proprietors. Our House survived the Prohibition years by serving soft drinks, then stayed in business as a tavern until the late 1950s. This label for "Extra Quality Pure Rye Whiskey" notes that the product "conform[s] to national and state pure food laws," a reflection of the movement in the early 1900s to protect consumers from adulterated or mislabeled food and drug products. Handwritten on back of label: since 1899 / soft drinks during Prohibition / tavern of that name there until 1959 |
