Description

‘Oudenard’ by Norman Garstin, c.late 1870s. The painting depicts a red and black barge stacked with logs in the foreground. A female figure wearing a black dress and pinafore with her hair tied back stands on the barge (as if operating it). A large white building with four chimneys is seen in the distance on the canal bank. Another building is part seen on the left.

Garstin (1847-1926) was an Irish artist, who was closely associated with the Newlyn School. Studying on the continent, Garstin travelled around Europe, executing his landscape scenes. Influenced by Impressionism, Garstin’s style is striking through use of quick and strong brush strokes.
