reedeoverwelfde Galerij, die binnenplaatsen omsluitend, door deze overvloedigbelicht en tot toegang dienend voor de verschillende vertrekken. Op de einden dier ruime hooge Galerijen bevinden zich steenenhoofdtrappen, de onder- en bovenverdieping verbindend. De Burgerzaal, bij bijzondere gelegenheden feestzaal tevens, was metde daarbij aansluitende Galerijen de voor eenieder toegankelijke wacht-of wandelzaal, het belangrijkste, het voornaamste gedeelte van het Raad-huis, de Eere- of Paradezaal, die moest getuigen van de beteekenis,de macht en rijkdom der Stad. Dat doel is, dank zij het talent van den bouwmeester, volkomen bereikt;die Eerezaal, is niet alleen geworden het belangrijkste en prachtigste gedeeltevan het Raadhuis, maar zij beheerscht ook de geheele indeeling, als zijndemet hare Galerijen de kern van het gebouw, daarvan ruim 40 °/0 oppervlakbeslaande; om die Zaal met hare Galerijen, is feitelijk het Raadhuis gebouwd. »• 33 258 TIET XVIPE-EEUWSCIIE RAADHUIS VAN AMSTERDAM.
