met hun achtergevels in de zijgrachten staande en, deels aldaar voor-
heen op het leukste soms uit- of overgebouwd; een vijftal steenen
boogbruggen geven over die grachten toegang tot het Marctvelt in
welks midden in 1595 een van blauwe en witte steenen rond perk werd
gemaakt, voorstellende een kompas met het stadswapen met het rand-
schrift: „Elck Wandel in Godts Wegen.
Oud-Gouda.
Bij het kasteel ter Goude, ter plaatse waar de rivier van dien
naam met eene elleboogvormige kromming in den IJsel uitmondt, had
zich eene buurt tot dorp, tot stad ontwikkeld, welke door bemiddeling
van haar Heer in 1272 van den Graaf van Holland stadsrecht had
gekregen. Die stad, Gouda genaamd, is mede in het bezit eener
buitengewoon ruime markt, midden in 't oude stadsgedeelte gelegen.
Waarschijnlijk vormde het tegenwoordig markt- en kerkplein hier
voorheen óén groot vrij veld, voordat daarop in de laatste helft der
XIIIde eeuw de parochiekerk werd gesticht, deze aan hare noordzijde

werd ombouwd en zich met het kerkplein van dat veld afscheidde.
Het driehoekig marktveld, dat daarbij overbleef, werd op 1 Juli 1365
door de stad gekocht van den Heere van der Goude en met

oude Vranckrijcxe Vrancken in gereede penningen betaelt ende met
noch 40 schellingen Hollant goets gelts 's jaers te betaelen op St. Jan
te midsomer; des mach men op 't voorsz. Markt-velt wel timmeren een
Halle, Raethuys, Wanthuys ende Vleeshuys, alsoo groot als 't die
stede oirbaer ende nut dunckt te wesen tot der stede behoef. De plaets
leggende omtrent de Halle sal onbetimmert blijven.
Eerst in het jaar 1449 werd nu midden op dat groote plein het
Raadhuis gebouwd, op welk plein, toen of reeds vroeger met huizen
ombouwd, de vier hoofdstraten uitkomen, en dat, door de vele kleine
en lage huisjes waarmede het omzet is, buitengewoon groot en ruim
schijnt, zie het plan der stad van A° 1585, afb. N°. 103, alstoen waar-
schijnlijk op stadskosten gemaakt en G. Braun ter opname in zijn
Atlas toegezonden
