N°. 73,toont op t duidelijkst de verandering van het voorheen streng een-voudige, verdedigbare poortgebouw in een sierlijk poorthuis vanspelenden vorm, met beeldhouwwerk en met middentoren met kloken uurwerk. Meestal echter verdween met de omwalling ook de poort endiende verder een eenvoudig of sierlijk hekwerk of hom ei op ofvóór de brug geplaatst, tot afsluiting, tot met de afschaffing dei-accijnzen en der poortsluiting, ook dit hekwerk, ook die homei ver-dween en de stad nu evenals het dorp ten allen tijde voor eenieder vrijelijk openstond. De waterpoorten. Tot de poorten eener stad behoorden mede hare zoogenaamdewaterpoorten, zijnde hare in de ommuring of omwalling aangebrachteoverboogde gracht- of haven-doorlaten, waarvan die te Zutphen overde rivier de Berkel wel eene der eigenaardigste is, zie afb. 28.
