| Description | Ottoman kalkan shield, 18th to early 19th century, composed of concentric wicker woven with coloured thread, the exterior made up of radial steel bars linking the steel frame, steel domed center boss with rosette and five square finials. The interior center set with wood and remains of the original red fabric lining, leather strap, six iron rings for suspension. The flexibility of the wicker absorbed the power of arrows and swords. Diameter: 26 cm (10 1/4 in). The basic structure dates back to the purely woven shields of the Mongols and early Turks in the 15th and 16th century: spirally plaited around a pane made of wood, thin plant rods are stitched firmly with fabric threads. |
