According to Charles Stirton, the leading botanist for this genus, this species used to be known as Psoralea stachydis, and is endemic to the Piketberg, but shall be transfered to Otholobium. It used to be included in O. hirtum. It was sunk into Psoralea hirta by H.M.L. Forbes in her 1930 revision of Psoralea. Fieldwork and DNA have shown it to be quite distinct.
