Ostrich Egg Standing Cup
Author
Title
Ostrich Egg Standing Cup
Description
The combination of exotic naturalia and refined gold work makes this cup a typical Kunstkammer or Wunderkammer piece. On top of a pierced base with sturdy coral trunks, a Moor leads an ostrich on a long chain, the bird carrying its own egg on its back. It also has a horseshoe in its beak, which even in the sixteenth century was a bringer of luck. The motif of ostriches as eaters of iron derives from classical legend, and means 'strength through resistance', because the bird is so robust that it can digest stone and iron and draw nourishment from them. The corals are complementary, because they were considered to be a remedy against lumps in the intestines and the blood as well as providing protection against the evil eye and magic.
