Fleury-devant-Douaumont (55) The Douaumont ossuary is a memorial to French soldiers who died in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun. It is located on the border of the communes of Douaumont-Vaux and Fleury-devant-Douaumont, a few kilometers from Verdun. The ossuary was designed after the armistice of 1918 on the initiative of Bishop Charles Ginisty of the Bishop of Verdun. Inaugurated on August 7, 1932 by the President of the Republic, it houses the remains of 130,000 unknown soldiers, French and Germans. It is the place of one of the symbols of Franco-German friendship: the handshake of François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl on September 22, 1984. It is listed as a historical monument since May 2, 1996. Opposite the ossuary is the national necropolis of Douaumont gathers 16,142 graves of French soldiers, mostly Catholics, including a square of 592 headstones of Muslim soldiers.
