Tall trees with expressive branches grow in a row along an area of grass.

Thomas Farm. Osage Orange trees discovered growing on the plains of the mid-west were brought east in 1803 to Philadelphia. During the nineteenth century, the agricultural press promoted living fences as an alternative to expensive post and rail fencing. When trimmed into hedges, this thorny tree was effective in containing livestock.
