Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Orrin Burdict House, 88 West Utica Street, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. Built in 1872, this richly hued, ponderously massed red brick mansion exemplifies the Romanesque Revival style of architecture (especially evident around the portico, with its round arches, squat columns with stylized capitals, and unusual rows of oculus-like openings lining the base) while also pointing the way forward toward the Queen Anne style that would come to dominance within a couple decades (the tent-roofed octagonal turret at the southwest corner of the building). It was the longtime home of Orrin Clark Burdict (1822-1923), a Canadian by birth who came to Buffalo some time after serving as a lieutenant in the Civil War and went on to cofound the firm of Plumb, Burdict & Barnard, manufacturer of nuts and bolts whose factory was located for many years on Clinton Street. Burdict lived in the house until 1910, when records show he moved to a room in the Hotel Markeen on Main Street where he would reside until his death.
