English: 1971 De Tomaso Pantera
Car brands that have been dropped by their manufacturer are commonly referred to as Orphans. Is that really the most accurate term though? In the most literal sense orphan is a child whose parents have passed on. In most cases these cars have been dropped by the manufacturer and the company continues on. Jeep seems to be the Marque that fits the orphan example the best. Jeep Brand outlasted parent companies Willys, Kaiser and AMC. Chrysler Corporation bought AMC, but then merged to become DaimlerChrysler AG only later to be sold to Cerberus Capital Management and eventually a subsidiary of Fiat that became Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and since a 2021 merger with the French PSA Group to form Stellantis. What would be a better term? Abandoned, deserted, ditched or dumped seem more likely to apply to individual vehicles that are discarded after use in a crime or just no longer wanted. May be Forsaken or Jilted cars? What do you think? Click here for more car pictures by make. Click here for Car Event pictures by year. Or on Twitter @DVS1mn. |
