Description |
35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Falconiformes; Family: Accipitridae; Genus: Gyps; Genus species: Gyps bengalensis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 75-85 cm; Identification: The white-backed vulture has blackish plumage with a contrasting white neck-ruff, lower back, and rump. The naked parts of its head, neck, and feet are dark; Habitat: Open country, vicinity of abattoirs, cliffs, mostly lowlands up to 2,600 m; Diet: Carnivore: carrion; Reproduction: Pairs begin nesting in October and continue through March. Nests are built 5-30 meters above ground in a tree. The nest is usually large and bulky with a shallow cup. There is one egg per clutch; Social Structure: Relatively large groups may form at carcasses; Behavior: These vultures are often found in the vicinity of slaughterhouses, municipal refuse dumps, and outskirts of villages; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: This is the smallest species of the genus Gyps. It has been described that the white-rumped vulture will participate in active, collaborative hunting, where a group of about 15 vultures will land around a patty field, slowly walking up and then rushing a flock of village ducks. |
