With armsclose to the sides, and a line intersecting the body at the waist, avery reasonable representation of the Taj will be suggested ; a linedrawn from either side of the body so divided to the centre point ofthe top of the head forms a distinct pyramid, while a line clearinghead and shoulders might stand for the original design of thePyramids themselves. The same test can be applied to the wholehuman figure ; that is to say, taking a perpendicular line dividingthe body, lines drawn clearing the head and shoulders, and meetingat the broad base which would automatically follow, give apyramidal form which encourages my suggestion. As a prelude to what follows, Fateh Khans first startling pieceof information probably had the effect of making his account of the Lost Carpet of the Taj Mahal seem commonplace, the idea beingone which might readily occur to any one familiar with the exquisitefineness and colour of the sixteenth century Persian Carpets, of whichShah Jahan in his various palaces would probably have many of thechoicest specimens, which the Persian monarchs were accustomedto have specially manufactured in the royal palaces, as presents forforeign potentates. It must be remembered that Shah Abbas theGreat, under whose rule the Persian Carpet arrived at its highestperfection, came to the throne in 1585, and his reign lasted until1628
